Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
Inclusion and SEND at Bowesfield Primary School
At Bowesfield Primary School, we are committed to providing an inclusive education for all our pupils. We believe that every child has the right to learn in a supportive environment that recognises their individual needs and celebrates their unique potential.
In line with the SEND Code of Practice (2015), all members of staff share a collective responsibility to ensure that children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are fully included in all aspects of school life. We firmly uphold the principle that “all teachers are teachers of children with SEND.”
We understand that children learn at different rates and in a variety of ways. Our teachers take this into account when planning and delivering lessons, using differentiated approaches to meet pupils where they are in their learning journey. Despite this, some children may still find learning more challenging than others of the same age and may require additional support.
Children may need extra help for a variety of reasons, including:
- Difficulties with reading, writing, number work, or understanding information
- Trouble expressing themselves or understanding spoken language
- Challenges with organisation or managing routines
- Difficulties understanding and following rules
- Problems building friendships or relating to adults
- A medical condition
- A sensory need, such as visual or hearing impairment
Our Inclusion Team works closely with class teachers, teaching assistants, parents, and the children themselves to develop robust, individualised support plans. These plans are centred around each child’s specific needs and are focused on supporting their progress and wellbeing.
We are also proud to work in partnership with a range of external agencies and professionals to ensure that our children receive the most appropriate and effective support. These include Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists (SALT), Occupational Therapists (OT), specialist teachers, and counselling services. These partnerships allow us to access expert advice, specialist assessments, and targeted interventions that further enhance the support we provide in school.
We are fortunate to have a spacious school building and extensive grounds, which allow us to deliver a range of targeted interventions in a variety of learning environments.
The Hive – Our Specialist SEND Unit
In addition to our inclusive mainstream provision, Bowesfield Primary School is proud to host a specialist SEND unit known as The Hive, which supports children with Communication & Interaction (C&I) needs and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The Hive provides a calm, structured, and nurturing environment for children who require a more personalised approach to their learning and development.
Places in The Hive are allocated by the Local Authority through the statutory consultation process as part of a child’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Children must have an EHCP in place, and the Local Authority must formally name Bowesfield Primary School’s SEND unit, as the appropriate provision within the plan. This ensures that placements are made following a thorough assessment of needs and in close consultation with the school, in line with the SEND Code of Practice.
The Hive is staffed by a dedicated team of experienced professionals who deliver tailored learning programmes, therapeutic support, and targeted interventions. While it offers a more specialist setting, strong links with the wider school community are maintained to promote inclusion and shared opportunities wherever possible.
